On August 13th, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly adopted a resolution that represents a significant milestone in the protection of the rights of older persons worldwide.
This Assembly, which includes all UN member states, adopted a resolution praising the efforts of the Open-ended Working Group on Ageing, which includes Réseau FADOQ.
The General Assembly also recommended defining the next steps regarding the challenges and opportunities related to the rights and well-being of seniors in connection with the proposals of the Working Group.
Réseau FADOQ particularly wishes for the Human Rights Council to be designated as the appropriate body to advance the project of an international convention on the rights of older persons.
For over a decade, Réseau FADOQ has been involved with the Open-ended Working Group on Ageing, which includes member states and non-governmental organizations. This group aimed to identify gaps in the protection of the rights of seniors and to recommend various options to address the situation.
In May, a report from the Working Group recommending the adoption of an international convention on the rights of older persons was submitted to the General Assembly for adoption.
The adoption of this resolution is therefore a new step in the right direction towards the development of an international convention.
