You suffer from a disability or have mobility issues? Discover how adaptive wear can help you daily and improve your quality of life.
For most of us, putting on or taking off a garment is not problematic. One might just need a few seconds and there you go, done! Yet, for some people, including those suffering from a disability and those of us with mobility issues, this simple task can be quite a challenge. Fortunately, these people can count on adaptive wear. Have you heard of it?
Adaptive wear are normal garments. Although they may resemble “traditional” items of clothing, they are items that have been modified in order to make a difference in the lives of those that wear them.
People with disabilities or mobility issues have specific dressing needs. For example, an individual that just had shoulder surgery is not in a position to slip on a dress shirt the same way as person with a perfectly healthy shoulder can. Likewise, an incontinent disabled person or senior citizen needs pants that have an opening system that can facilitate changing that person’s underwear quickly, may it be by oneself or with the help of a caregiver.
With the openings located in the front or on the side of the garment, buttons and laces replaced by Velcro and pockets positioned more towards the front, adaptive wear answers to the person’s specific needs relating to the daily challenge of dressing and undressing. Yet, adaptive wear should not stop at that. It needs to take it a step further.
We all know how much our appearance is important to us and how it connects to self-esteem. With this in mind, adaptive wear’s purpose needs to be two-fold. Yes, it needs to present an ingenious design, but it also needs to help the people that wear the garments feel good and look good. It is with these two objectives in mind that each adaptive garment is created.
Adaptive wear allows many people living with disabilities or mobility issues say, “Yes, I can, and yes, I’ll make it happen!” Adaptive wear is not a simple garment. It is a super-garment. It is a little like the superhero that saves the day, Hollywood-style.
