When the time came for Agathe Léveillée to retire, she was totally unprepared. She had no particular plans or projects. At 55, this longtime administrative assistant was wondering about her future.
Then, one day, she enrolled in a floristry course, which turned out to be the beginning of a great adventure. Everything started from there.
“I felt that life was sending me signals,” she says. “It was as if one passion gave rise to another. Floristry resurrected my interest in writing, something I’ve always held close to my heart. I began to imagine stories for children.”
To date, Agathe Léveillée has written nine stories entitled Les aventures de Charlotte (The Adventures of Charlotte). And she has no intention of stopping any time soon. Her latest book, available in bookstores since August, was self-published with the help of Montreal-based publisher BouquinBec.
As well as writing, the 68-year-old has become involved in humanitarian travel. Recruited in 2012 by a friend, she has made four trips so far, mainly to the Tibetan region. She has just returned from a seven-week trip to northern India, during which she spent five weeks working with the Tibetan Settlement Office in McLeod Ganj, a suburb of the city of Dharamsala.
“My job was to teach basic French to young adults, in addition to working on a scrapbooking project with two classes of younger children. It was quite a challenge for me, as someone who doesn’t have children. It was an extraordinary and unforgettable experience to be involved with these Tibetan refugees. It was one the happiest times of my life.”
A highlight of the trip was her meeting with the Dalai Lama, with whom she chatted for a few minutes.
Ms. Léveillée’s advice to people her age: get to know yourself better and step out of your comfort zone.
“You’re going to love it and grow from it. As for me, I hope I’m leading by example. I’d like people to see me and be inspired.”
A FADOQ member for the past five years, Ms. Léveillée affirms that FADOQ contributes to her happiness through the different aspects of its mission. The sexagenarian keeps abreast of everything her regional group organizes in the Gatineau area. She is constantly on the lookout for group trips and special occasions (Christmas dinners, FADOQ – Outaouais Region 50th anniversary, etc.) and tries to take part in them, if her many interests allow her the time!
