Lise Désilets Lalande has enjoyed a busy life and career.
Hailing from Montreal’s Tétreaultville district, she is something of a pioneer. At a time when there were no childcare centres, she managed to hold down a demanding job while raising her two children. She paved the way for women today.
“My days were very full,” she says, after a long career as an administrative assistant in commercial insurance. “I’m very proud of everything I’ve achieved. In the course of my life, I’ve been president of various associations and held several important positions. I even ran for mayor of Anjou.”
Now 83, Lise Désilets Lalande continues to give generously of her time. She has thrown herself into community work, doing more than her fair share of volunteering. And for the past few months, she has been devoting a great deal of energy to caring for her husband, who is unfortunately showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease.
“We’ve been married 61 years. He has always supported me in all my projects. It’s the least I can do to become his caregiver,” she says. “My husband has always pushed for us to maintain our independence within the relationship, saying that you have to do what you love in life. I’m very grateful to him for that.”
Lise Désilets Lalande plays golf at least twice a week. In winter, she walks daily and also cross-country skis.
“The secret lies in discipline. I was a member of the Mercier walking club for a long time, but I’ve slowed down a bit. I often walked for over an hour in Maisonneuve Park.”
A long-time FADOQ member, Ms. Désilets Lalande used to organize concerts at the Maison de la Culture Mercier. Among other things, she was in charge of finding sponsors. More recently, she went to see La Fabuleuse Histoire d’un Royaume in Saguenay. The trip, which took place on July 12-13, was organized by FADOQ – Île de Montréal.
A last piece of advice from her: surround yourself with good people and be independent, provided, of course, that you’re in good health.
