Lucie Chartrand adores walking. An avid birdwatcher, she knows every nook and cranny of Angrignon Park, which she criss-crosses on outings she organizes herself.
“Since 2006, I’ve been meeting people near the Angrignon metro station, and we’ve been discovering the region’s most beautiful birds,” she says. “The park holds no secrets for me, I’ve walked it so much.”
In addition to these birdwatching outings, last year—at the age of 69—this resident of Montreal’s Lasalle borough completed the 10-kilometre walk at the Montreal 21K event.
Lucie Chartand claims that people who meet her can’t tell how old she is, partly because of her physical appearance. She thinks it’s because she has always tried to keep as fit as possible. For many years, she rented a cottage on Lac Simon and swam laps every day, which kept her body young.
The recent septuagenarian says she keeps busy, as she also enjoys drawing and watercolour painting. After the pandemic, she had hoped to resume these activities, but there was nothing available in her neck of the woods. So she contacted an engraving instructor.
“I’ve never done this before in my life, and do you know what? I find it fascinating! In today’s fast-paced digital age, it’s good to be an apologist for slowness. With engraving, everything is slow and that’s good. It’s relaxing and that’s what I like.”
Lucie Chartrand understands that we don’t all age the same way, but health permitting, she believes it’s essential to maintain one’s curiosity. There’s a lot of bad news in the world right now. For her, it’s important to take a step back, turn off the screens and get outside, whatever your age.
“There’s still more beauty to discover. Take birdwatching, for example. It’s fascinating, once you get into it. We can’t stop doing things and, above all, we can’t wait for things to come to us.”
A FADOQ member for five years, she likes to peruse the Facebook page to see what others are doing, and she participates in several FADOQ activities, including the Aventuriers Voyageurs films. She also appreciates FADOQ’s lobbying of governments and reads Virage magazine religiously.
“I’m very happy to be a FADOQ member. I dream of traveling again. I used to go off on my own, but I have to admit that right now, I’m hesitating. That said, if I let time go by, I’ll become even more fearful, so I think I’ll book myself a little trip soon. “
