Joined by his faithful friend Jean-Guy Lamadeleine, Pierre Raymond took on the extraordinary challenge of cycling across Mexico and the United States to return home to the Gatineau region.
The story starts on April 11, when Pierre and Jean-Guy mounted their bikes in the town of Tampico, not far from Acapulco. After a few navigational pitfalls, they pedaled 113 km to the small town of Aldama. The expedition was officially underway. Over 47 days, the two 60-somethings covered no less than 4,589 km, an average of 98 km per day. They rode through three countries, nine American states and two Canadian provinces.
“We were well prepared, but we were also lucky with the weather,” says Pierre Raymond. “We never had two consecutive days of rain. On the other hand, the wind caused us problems from Texas onwards. Despite the intense pain in many parts of our bodies, we kept on because we wanted to achieve our goal.”
The 67-year-old loves cycling long distances, and, in the past, has taken part in the Grand Tour and the Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie. He believes his secret is simply to stay fit. He is active every day and does sit-ups. With the small gym (treadmill, elliptical, weights) he’s set up in his house he has everything at his fingertips.
“If you’re healthy, that’s what I suggest. Stay active. Move your body as often as you can. And try to maintain a healthy diet.”
Pierre Raymond also points out that it’s essential to adopt the sport that suits your body. For instance, jogging is not on for the man from Gatineau.
“Running is not for me. As for pedaling, I’m doing all right,” he laughs. “We must listen to our bodies. As we age, our joints don’t function as well. You don’t want to push the machine unnecessarily.”
A FADOQ member for eight years, Pierre Raymond appreciates the articles in Virage and on the Réseau FADOQ website.
“I read a lot about seniors’ well-being; it resonates with me. I’ve also taken part in FADOQ celebrations in the Outaouais region over the past few months. It was a lot of fun.”
His ultimate dream is to ride in Europe. We hope you do, Mr. Raymond!
