FADOQ proposes key priorities for the health prevention strategy
Réseau FADOQ welcomes the Ministry of Health and Social Services' (MSSS) initiativ...
“I don’t care about age. I just live! And I manage to do things that I’m sure will do me good.”
These words of wisdom come from Pierre Rhéaume, a Mascouche native who has worked in communications and public relations for many years. At the age of 70, he continues to work, whether on his own for Pierre Rhéaume communications inc., as communications director for the Centre d’insémination artificielle du Québec (Ciaq), or as a columnist for La Terre de chez nous. As someone who is concerned about the labour shortage problem, Pierre Rhéaume feels he is contributing to the well-being of the community.
“I’m very serene and happy to be doing this,” he explains. “I have tons of business projects and I’m still putting a lot of energy into them. But I set myself limits and I manage to respect them by remaining disciplined.”
In addition to working, Pierre Rhéaume plays soccer twice a week. It’s a sport he’s been playing since 1978, but for the last 20 years or so, he’s been playing as a goalkeeper.
“I became a goalkeeper somewhat by default, but it’s a position I love. At 70, it’s certain that I don’t throw myself from one side to the other. But that doesn’t matter: I do the job within my capabilities. My aim is to play until I’m 80.”
So, what’s his secret? According to him, his maternal ancestors were very active and lived to a ripe old age. He also reads a lot, including on the subject of aging.
“Three things are important at my age: socializing, being active and eating well,” he says. “Getting up makes more of a racket than it used to, but being curious helps to keep my brain active.”
A FADOQ member for some 20 years, Pierre Rhéaume keeps abreast of activities via Facebook and LinkedIn, and through the newsletters.
“I like the fact that FADOQ presents seniors as active people, not just residents of private seniors residences and nursing homes. It sends a very positive message about growing old. I often encourage my friends to take the plunge and become members.”
