Yolande Michaud fell in love for the first time at the age of 70. Today, at the ripe old age of 79, the Montreal native says this simple, comforting love keeps her young at heart.
“You know, when happiness comes around, you take it,” she says with a smile in her voice. “Things are so easy these days. I don’t ask myself any questions; I just go with the flow.”
She met her beloved partner during an international cooperation project in Nicaragua. Even though they were in close contact for about two months, it wasn’t until the end of the trip that things clicked between them.
“We’ve just returned from a lovely stay in Wells, Maine. We’ve made 12 trips together. Last summer, we crossed Canada in 49 days. What an unforgettable experience!”
The septuagenarian knows she looks really young, to the point that she’s asked for ID to get on the bus for free. What’s more, the former actress says she doesn’t dye her hair and doesn’t much care for make-up.
To keep fit, Yolande Michaud likes to spend time outdoors, whether to take a leisurely stroll or tend her garden.
“I’m a great walker. My secret is that I’ve always loved walking,” she says. “When I was younger, I used to take my backpack with me. I once toured Île d’Orléans on foot.”
Steady on her feet, she’s not afraid to climb a stepladder, even at her age. “In 2007, when I sold my house to move into a condo, it was essential for me to have a large garden where I could continue to play with all my tools: wheelbarrow, pruning shears, etc. I absolutely had to have some greenery. All living things appeal to me.”
You may be reading her autobiography in a few years’ time, as Yolande Michaud is working on it right now. In 2020, it was Janette Bertrand who inspired her to tell her life story. The project makes her really happy. It’s a daily rendezvous that is as sacred as the morning coffee she sips while writing.
