We now know the details of the free shingles vaccination program. As of May 1, Quebecers aged 80 and over and immunocompromised persons aged 18 and over will be able to receive the shingles vaccination free of charge.
For several years, Réseau FADOQ has pressed for free vaccination against shingles. Our organization is therefore pleased to see progress on this issue at last.
Although the groups that will have access to the free vaccine are limited at this time, it is good news, especially since the Québec government has already indicated its intention to extend access to the vaccine to more people in the future. Réseau FADOQ has repeatedly called for shingles to be included in the Québec immunization program for all people aged 65 and over.
People who are currently eligible will be able to get vaccinated at vaccination centres in the health network as well as at many pharmacies. Québec’s ministry of health has also announced that vaccination teams will be touring long-term care facilities (CHSLDs).
Appointments will be available in a few weeks, on Clic Santé or at 1 877 644-4545.
The vaccine used in this program consists of two doses. It is about 90% effective in preventing shingles in all age groups, with long-term protection of about 10 years.
