In less than a week, the Canada 55+ Games will commence in Québec City, organized by Réseau FADOQ.

From August 27 to 30, more than 2,200 athletes from across the country, 600 supporters and 120 volunteers, will take part in the disciplines and activities of these Games, which are being staged for the first time in Québec.

“FADOQ has prepared a memorable Games. We look forward to welcoming all the delegations to this great active gathering. Fun will be had at every site,” said FADOQ president Gisèle Tassé-Goodman.

Athletes will compete in 20 disciplines, covering summer sports (track and field, slo-pitch, swimming and pickleball, tennis), winter sports (curling and hockey) and intellectually stimulating activities (bridge, cribbage, scrabble). The Games will be held at several venues in Quebec City, including ExpoCité, Université Laval’s PEPS and the Intact Insurance Ice Centre.

The first day will conclude in style with the Games Opening Ceremony, at ExpoCité, starting at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 27. As for the Olympic Games, each delegation will have its own flag bearer. Many dignitaries will be on hand, including the Minister responsible for Seniors, Sonia Bélanger.

In addition to the competitions and ceremonies, participants will enjoy a host of activities, featuring a festive banquet evening with the musical group Bestov and a guided tour of Old Québec.

The economic impact of the Games is estimated at $2 million for the Capitale-Nationale region.

Pierre Harvey in action

Throughout the event, Olympian Pierre Harvey, Ambassador for the Canada 55+ Games, will be on hand at competition venues to meet and cheer on the athletes.

In fact, he will be running unofficially in the five-kilometre race on Thursday August 29. The Mayor of Quebec City, Bruno Marchand, has accepted Mr. Harvey’s challenge and will also be at the starting line. The race will start at 6 p.m. at Parc de la Pointe-aux-Lièvres.

“I’m really looking forward to experiencing the excitement of the Canada 55+ Games and meeting people from all over Canada. Physical activity has always been a part of my life, and this event is a great way to encourage an active lifestyle for adults 55 and over,” said Pierre Harvey, who has competed in four Olympic Games.
