Too many seniors are victims of abuse every year in Québec. Réseau FADOQ is taking the opportunity of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day to remind us that every effort must be made to eliminate elder abuse.
Public awareness and prevention campaigns are crucial. As part of this day, which is held every year on June 15, the Réseau FADOQ will take part in a number of awareness-raising activities. Several of our organization’s regional groups will be offering information sessions on the Seniors Aware program, aimed at preventing fraud and elder abuse.
Elder abuse can take many forms: physical, psychological, sexual, organizational, material or financial. It is also manifested in the form of ageism and violation of rights.
In 2019 in Québec, nearly 80,000 people aged 65 and over had experienced at least one type of abuse in the prior 12 months.
In 2022, Réseau FADOQ mobilized to improve the law against elder abuse by adding measures such as criminal penalties for perpetrators and mandatory reporting by caregivers.
We urge anyone who feels they are a victim or witness of abuse to find support, especially through the Elder Mistreatment Helpline [Ligne Aide Maltraitance Adultes Aînés] (1-888-489-2287).
